Avery's Birthday

It has taken me over a week to post this...but I want to write about the day Avery made her arrival into this world! It was such an amazing and incredible day, and I want to remember it forever!

Our induction was scheduled for 5 AM on Tuesday morning, June 22nd. Bill and I both were so excited/ anxious that we could not sleep much at all. It just seemed so crazy that after 9 months of being pregnant we would actually get to meet Avery that very day! We woke up at about 4:15 and got ready to go to the hospital.

Once we got there, we were taken to our room, I answered lots of questions, and then the IV was started. By about 6:00, the nurse started the pitocin. I had been contracting infrequently that morning so the contractions got pretty regular quickly. I was 4 cm as of that morning. Being a labor and delivery nurse previously made the whole process a little less anxiety producing than it probably would have been if I hadn't known what was going on. I was watching the monitors when we first got there, but decided that I needed to not focus on them for my sanity!

At about 8:15, my contractions were every two minutes but they weren't hurting. My doctor came in to break my bag of water and IMMEDIATELY it got painful. I thought that it would be gradual but nope, they were intense! My nurse had gotten everything ready previously for the epidural so I was able to get it about 30 or 45 minutes after the strong contractions began. Billy was so supportive during this time. He was very encouraging and talked me through each contraction.

Once the epidural was in, the nurse rechecked me. I was 7cm at that point. I was really comfortable by that point, so we had several friends and family members come which helped to make time pass more quickly.

By around 12:30-12:45 I was completely dilated, and the nurse let me labor down (meaning let her head come down on its own with the contractions instead of pushing forever). At around 1:15, I began pushing. She was here at 1:33.

I feel so fortunate to have a birth story like this one. I know that this probably means that my next will not be so perfect! Billy and I have talked about how that day was actually really fun which I don't think many people would say about labor! It's amazing to have Avery here with us and to have a family of three now!
